How to Improve Hand Sanitation at TJC

Illness is a primary cause of absences and poor performance in class amongst students. Most illnesses TJC students suffer are caused by bacteria and viruses contracted by hands through handling rubbish, animals, living with the sick or by using the toilet among many other reasons. This is because they lack information on measures to keep their hands clean after visiting the restrooms or triggers and reminders that encourage them to observe hygiene of their hands. The reluctance to wash hands after using the restrooms is a common problem facing TJC students, and it can be averted through three simple solutions. The school needs to inform and train the students on keeping their hands clean by putting signs at strategic places, making hand sterilizing substances available and through education and as discussed below.

First, the institution needs to educate and remind the students using the facilities to observe cleanliness of their hands by washing them correctly and at every time they visit the restrooms. This can be facilitated by putting signs at strategic places in the restrooms. All doors and sinks in the restroom should be fitted with hand washing signs that call for any user of the facility to wash their hands after use. The signs should bear information on the importance of washing hands and how to do it properly to remain hygienic, in order to serve as a reminder as well to anybody who forgets to wash their hands.

Secondly, the school should provide the students with hand sterilizers such as Germ-X. Putting bottles of Germ-X in all halls in the school, especially in the food facilities, could be a valuable initiative. This can make the hand sterilizing substances more available and encourage the students to always clean their hands before and after handling food items. Additionally, the school can give Germ-X to each individual student. The students will be able to access small quantities of the sterilizer which they can carry around and make it always within reach. Germ-x will be readily used in class and outside of classrooms to enhance the levels of sanitation.
