Giorgio and Micol

Developing a crush on someone is a very common relationship throughout life for men and women. In the book The Garden of the Finzi-Contini, Giorgio (the narrator) has a lifelong crush on Micol Finzi-Contini and. Giorgio second guess' himself many times about when the time is right to make a move on Micol. Giorgio has many highs and lows throughout the book dealing with his crush, but in the end, he comes to the realization that things play out just the way they should. Giorgio tells his lifelong crush as a flashback and relies only on his memory.

Giorgio first took interest in Micol around the age of 13, he remembers this well because he also failed a Mathematics exam the same day. They end up growing up and going to different colleges. She attends the University of Venice and Giorgio attends the University of Bologna. He took interest in her because she is beautiful, intelligent, Jewish, modern and being a tease, she keeps him guessing. The first time he went to the Finzi-Contini, Micol gave him a tour of her family's house and the estate. The two travel throughout the garden and she talks to the trees in dialect, people without schooling talk on dialect. Giorgio had no idea about the trees and felt embarrassed to say so, but Micol knew he wasn't comprehending what she was saying. "She looked at me as I were a monster" (The Garden of the Finzi-Contini, 70). "How can you possibly be so ignorant?" She would claim. "You must surely have studied a bit of botany at the liceo!"(70) Giorgio was a bit mad that she couldn't believe that there was someone in the world who didn't care for trees as much as she did. Giorgio got over his differences with trees and Micol and went on with his life.

Giorgio had a few good times where he could have made the move on Micol. The reason he didn't at the wall at her house was because he was too nervous, he believed it was a victory for not kissing her and dealing with the consequences. The other instance he could have kissed her was in the carriage, he just didn't react fast enough,
