Failure

Failure is something that everyone faces in some point in their lives. It is a process through which we learn from our mistakes and try to improve ourselves. Failure can come in every aspect of our lives. Education is the most common one, along with failure due to attitude. It may also include love failure, failure caused by dependence, and failure of time spent wisely. Failure is illustrated in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Keith J. Powell’s short story “Odds Are” and Thomas Steam’s renowned poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. In these works of literature, the characters cannot accomplish their goals and fail to pursue their intended objectives.

In the following literature, one sees love failing due to the individual’s attitude. Relating this to “Odds Are”, James and Molly fail to find true love due to their quick judgement of others. James and Molly both only focus on everyone’s weakness instead of their strengths as demonstrated by James, when he says

“How hard could it be? It’s impossible that’s how hard it is. I’ve been out there looking, no

matter how much I want to, I cant find anyone that I connect with. There is nothing there with the I’ve met. There is something, just a little bit with all of them, and that’s being generous, most of then are a lot bit off”.

Molly does not have any luck with her dates either. Even now, one’s attitude still effects their affection for someone. For example, I had a crush on someone and when I showed her that I really wanted to talk to her, she ignored me unintentionally. Then I suddenly started to ignore her, and suddenly she felt the need to talk to me herself. Therefore, by changing my attitude, it affected her affection for me. Lastly, in Elliot’s poem the love song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Prufrock has a pessimistic view, and is really insecure about himself. Prufrock says, “ The women come and go, talking to Michelangelo”. Prufrock compares himself with the renaissance man. However the renaissance man is a man of perfection and Prufrock this of himself nothing compared to perfection .

Failure is not only caused by attitude, but it is also caused by the lack of time management. This is demonstrated in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Hamlet wastes all his time trying to take revenge on Claudius. Therefore, due to his lack of time management, he had to give up on his education and the chance to become the renaissance man. On the other hand, In Powell’s short story “Odds Are”, time is not used efficiently or effectively. James and Molly are in love with each other and instead of strengthening their love, they waste time trying to find the perfect person. However, in reality they are still in love with each other. This is demonstrated by James when he says “ Molly, my ex-girlfriend, we were seeing each other for almost five years”, and Molly is also thinking about James while she is dating other men. “So
