Comparative Study of The Jilting of Granny Weathreall and A Rose for Emily

The paper sets out to compare the female characters---Granny Weatherall and Emily and the characterization in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall and A Rose for Emily. It is found that through the technique of stream-of-consciousness, symbolism and narrative point of view and the control of dialogue description, the two characters are enriched and highlighted.

Granny Weatherall and Emily have different backgrounds, are in different stories and different situations, however they have some similarities. They are valorous but timorous as well. This contradiction highlighted them and made them round.

Both of these two tragic lades have same kind of live that are fill of ups and downs. The events they have went through make them unique and they still live in their own way.

Granny Weatherall has been abandoned by her fiancé in church, also because of her husband’s early death she have to live alone and take care of her children by herself.

Miss Emily lived under her father’s protection and she somehow relied on him. Her father limited her range and drove her pursuers, and it built her a dissocial personality. After her father dead, she lost his supports and crashed. Even though, she didn’t become negative to everything, she started to seek her love, and fall in love with Homer Barron—a northerner under so many pressures around her.

Facing to misfortunes, Granny Weatherall and Miss Emily didn’t give way to them, they survived—in their own way. They are braved.

On the other hand, they also like to sidestep problems. Granny Weatherall didn’t forget George, and what he did followed her untired live. She kept avoiding this fact, the fact that hurt her so much.
