In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", Roger Chillingworth,Hester's husband, is a villain because he becomes a man deficient in human warmth due to his desire to gain revenge against Hester's forbidden paramour:Reverend Dimmesdale. His vindictive desire and malice affects his external appearance and makes him torture Reverend Dimmesdale.

Roger Chillingworth is a villain because he wants to exact revenge against Dimmesdale. When Chillingworth talk to Hester in her prison cell, he talks to her Dimmesdale, and how he has "wronged" both Hester and himself. He then vows that he "...shall seek this man..." and "...shall see him tremble".Chillingworth must feel that Dimmesdale is the only person here who has wronged him.He feels hurt and directs his pain, anger, and frustration towars Dimmesdale. As the result,we have a villain whom becomes so consumed by his malice that is no longer a reasonable human being.

Roger Chillingworth proves his villainy with his vengeful nature.During the conversation between Chillingworth and Dimmesdale by the graveyard, Chillingworth mentions how "ugly weeds" grew out of a grave with no tombstone and this was because the man in this grave must contain some "hideous secret" buried with him which he should have confessed. Then, he mentions how Hester Prynne is less miserable due to her scarlet letter upon he breast which refers to her open sin.The conversation entails secret sin and confessions.Chillingworth further tortures and worsens Dimmesdale's guilt. His guilt continues to grow while he grow weaker and more ill. This adds and improves to what Chillingworth stands for:evil with cold reason and intellect unaffected by human emotion.
