As many people who are against capital punishment argue why capital punishment should be abolished. Deterrence is one of the main arguments. Deterrence is a method of deterring people from committing crimes; by showing what evens could happen to them from either electrocution or lethal injection. Most people, who commit crimes that can send them to death row, do not expect to be caught nor do not way the difference between life and electrocution before they commit the crime.

Another aspect of non-supporters use to convince someone not to support capital punishment is the cruel and unusual punishment. Many non-supporters say that using death penalty is wrong morally because it is cruel and inhumane to take a human's life, also adding that people who support death penalty need to quit trying to play God taking someone else's life. Many agree that people who have been electrocuted has been executed on account of being cruel and inhumane. For instance take the execution of John Evans who was electrocuted three times before dying. Many abolitionists believe in human rights and this is one of the many reasons why they want to abolish the death penalty.

Abolitionists believe that the cost of life without parole is cheaper than death row. Abolitionists say that it cost at least two million dollars per case. Abolitionist argue that capital punishment trials take longer, with longer phases of appeals to federal and state judges to grant stay to the prisoner, also the amount of money that is required to maintain staff, and house the prisoners while the criminals are awaiting execution. A study that was taken by the New York Defender's Association reported that the average death penalty case cost three times as much as it would cost to keep a prisoner on life without parole than to execute them. With money be a key role in the opposition's side, the issue is major argument in abolishing capital punishment.

Although the facts that are being shown are steep, there are many supporters of capital punishement. Supporters argue the same points, but there are also tow sides to every story. Abolitionist argue that states that use detterence, the rate is higher. In contrast, the difference includes the population, number of cities, and crime rates. In a recent poll, US Today poll found that 68 % of Americans favor capital punishement. However, the percentage goes up when someone is son trial for more than one person. In the cast of Timothy McVeigh, 81% of Americans supported death row.
