In most businesses there are three levels of management: strategic managers, tactical managers and operational managers. (Mejia, Balkin. 2002). Strategic managers implement plans that manage the entire company. Tactical managers are considered middle management that communicates the decisions of the strategic managers. Operational managers are the last of the three managers who are responsible for linking all three managers together. Although the operational managers are at the bottom of the totem pole, they are the most important to the entire operation because under this management the production of the company is created. When considering managing and what makes good management effective, various concepts are to be put in place. Management in relationship to people is like organization to implement an idea. Excellent skill sets and intuition are needed for a good manager to be effective. There has to be commitment, focus, and an understanding of what needs to be done so that production can operate with minimum interruptions.

Kathy Kudler did not set out to be a good manager but ended up doing so because she saw a need and was able to fulfill her love of gourmet cooking. Kudler was the vice president of marketing for a large defense contractor; with the busy career she found it hard to get all the things that she needed to make a gourmet meal. That led her to coming up with an idea to create a store that allows one to get all the items needed for a premier gourmet meal in one location. One-stop-shop will allow shopping for all the ingredients needed for a reasonably priced produce, meat, seafood, bakery, cheese, diary products, and wine products. Kudler created a synergy among her employees and her customers.

When it comes to Kudler Fine Foods this company relates to the primary functions of management. The first function strategizing encompasses all aspects and understanding from everyone as to what is going on in all processes. Kudler’s strategy was to have one location to purchase all gourmet items. This strategy has proven to be successful for the company. Kudler has a team of three managers who are responsible for this strategy to be carried out in her three locations. Kudler herself handles the purchasing of products, the accounting, human resources, and computer support. Next is organizing which involves specifying how the firm’s human, financial, physical, informational, and technical resources are arranged and coordinated to perform tasks to achieve desired goals. (Mejia, Balkin, 2002) These tasks are carried on by Kudler and one of her team managers Harvey Stephens who is the director of finance and accounting.

The next function is leading which is the person whom knows how to communicate the goals and the importance of the things that are needed to be done to obtain those goals. Again, Kudler heads oversees these tasks as she works between all three stores. The last function is controlling which is having a grasp of everything that is going on and preventing any problems from happening, or catching the problems early so that things do not get worse. As Kudler Fine Foods grows geographically is becoming increasingly difficult for Kudler to have as much hands on with her employees and customers at each store. Even though Kudler has the assist of her three managers Harvey Stephens, Yvonne Reynolds, and Brenda Wagner, Kudler makes all the major decisions. All parties have to be involved to reach the obtainable goal; therefore, all aspects have to be covered. Even with all this work that has to happen with the way that the world is today technology plays a big part in everything.

Technology is the means of transforming inputs into products. (Mejia, Balkin, 2002) Kudler expanded their business by creating a website. On the website information about all the items that Kudler has to offer and the three locations that renders their services are found. The website does not give enough information about Kudler Fine Foods. Utilizing the internet could bring about more lucrative results for the company. One are in particular would be advertising.
