EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Susan Meredith was hired at a satellite company located in British Columbia and based out of Toronto. Susan has a university degree in Business Administration and 20 years of customer relations experience. Susan failed to do her job research before starting her job of matching her credentials and salary expectations. Susan grew unhappy with her job due to stress and a dissatisfying compensation which she disclosed without any consideration to her co-worker. This was an unforbidden topic to discuss with others which was enforced by the boss, Mr. James.

Susan's defiance of policy led to her feelings of underrewarded inequity by finding that her comparison other, Helen who worked at the Head office in Toronto was being paid more for a less demanding job. She was furious and decided to take action by approaching Mr. James to convince him of a raise. Mr. James neglected Susan's concerns and ignored her which led to her withdrawal and further resignation some time after.

According to the analysis, Susan's lack of insight and weighing of options and their consequences caused the following effects:

* The boss's lack of concern towards her/ little reverence

* No price of worth-dissatisfaction of salary

* Motivation and attitude towards job took a plunge

For Susan to be motivated and engaged in her job:

* Susan must be paid for her qualifications and experience

* Have more pride in her job

* Have different job duties which are less demanding and stressful

Susan's alternatives are to relocate to Head Office, not go against Mr. James' confidentiality policy or leave the matter alone until her next employee evaluation.

The best solution for Susan is to relocate to a position in Head Office that is similar to Helen's. Susan should make sure she is happy with her position and continue to find ways to stay motivated in the workplace.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM(S) OR ISSUE(S)

Susan Meredith has a degree in business administration, a recent honours degree, as well as 20 years of customer relations and supervisory experience. Susan currently works for Mr. James in his western satellite offices in British Columbia. She is hardworking and dedicated to her career. Susan and her co-worker public relations rep Dan Donaldson were complaining about their jobs and started to compare their job to another lady that works in the Toronto Office. Horrible Helen lacks in customer service skills, has no valuable credentials and no seniority in the company. In spite of all this, because Helen is located in the Toronto office, she gets paid a considerable amount more than Susan for doing less of a job.

Knowing that Mr. James disapproves of his employees discussing their salaries, Susan disclosed her salary willingly to Dan. Dan couldn't believe that she was not earning nearly as much money as he believed Helen was making. It was then, that Dan offered Susan some confidential information, Helen's contract with her salary agreement.

With this confidential information at hand, Susan approached her boss, Mr. James to discuss this matter. Mr. James knew Susan wasn't being paid fairly. He gave no explanation, no validation, and ignored Susan's concerns. Susan left Mr. James office with a different attitude towards her job and Mr. James. Shortly after their meeting, Susan's work habits began to dwindle and because Mr. James took no action towards the problem, Susan left unhappily before her next evaluation.

* Susan has proof she was being paid unfairly according to her knowledge

* Uncertain whether she should disregard the confidential information or approach Mr. James with this matter
