IN THE WORLD OF CORPORATE MANAGERS

"In the world of corporate managers" is a great book written by Sharu Rangnekar. He is a chemical engineer from Mumbai and MBA from USA. He had a research work in Carnegie-Mellon university, Pittsburgh USA. He took the management training at ICI(UK), IBM and Union Carbide, USA and retired after working for 28 years. His early retirement give him an opportunity to do some educational and training work on management. And his fine works come as 3 marvelous books on management. The first one is "IN THE WONDERLAND OF INDIAN MANAGERS", second one is "MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS" and third one is "IN THE WORLD OF CORPORATE MANAGERS". The Author has used very lucid language in describing different problems, which arose in organizations and its solutions nicely found out by different prudent managers. He has elucidated the solutions by putting examples of his own practical experience. He has explained it very lucidly.

This book is intended for managers at all levels. According to him there are three ways of thinking: what should happen, what would happen and what could happen. Philosopher concentrates on "should"; politician exploit "would"; managers must focus on "could". This book focuses on "could". It talks of what managers could do in their organizations- by citing examples of how other managers have tackled efficiently the similar problems. He gives the solution to the problems those were confronted by the managers during performing their roles in the organizations. According to him the managers are not born managers and they needed to learn and understand the role that a manager has to play in an organization.

According to him the management consists of three tasks - Identify your responsibility and get committed to it ; Identify your resources and ultimately realize that you are yourself the most important resource and Experiment with the resources .The best example given by the Author to understand what management is, of housewife. Every girl, as soon as she gets married, identifies her responsibility and gets committed to it. Her responsibility is to convert a house into a home. And how efficiently she manages by her limited resources is a great management skill. The role of manager is very important in any organization because he is the person who should look how his workers are working, time discipline, and their motivation towards work and by keeping all these in track he also has to look for reaching the objective of the organization. A manager must identify the culture of organization he is working in and then perform his role effectively. By working hard would not ensure that the output would be maximum. You should know how effectively one can work to get the maximum output and to be effective manager he should have the functional skill and interpersonal skills to make these things happen.

The writer feels that any organization is effective only when there is a team-work and the team-work is successful only when each member of that team should have the motivation to make it a success. They should have the sense of purpose, sense of alertness and the habit of working physically together. The teams are not only concentrated to the subordinates but it also include the bosses and colleagues. By having this cordial relationship with his subordinates, colleagues and boss it helps managers to perform their work effectively.

Further in this book the writer gave the problems that a manager faces in the organization, for example - delegating the work and the confusion associated with that. As many managers don't like to delegate works either fearing that the person may perform better than what he did or that they don't have that much confidence in their subordinates. Another important work of any managers is to give the motivation to their subordinates as according to the author the main difference that lies between a person who performs very efficiently and a person of same capabilities not able to perform is because of the factor motivation. According to him the most important factors that motivates are sense of identity, sense of importance and sense of development of the employees.

Author gives a very comprehensive picture of managers and describes the different roles like communicating in the organization, taking decisions, making corporate planning etc. as communication is very important aspect and a difficult one too. The different problems associated with it are coding, lack of interest and transmission in communication. Another important barrier in communication is the feeling of "I am ok - You are not ok" we should try to make that "I am ok - You are ok" then communication will be successful.

Decision making is the most important function that a manager performs. As his decision include all the different aspect of the company so before taking any decision its acceptability and feasibility should be taking into account and also involve the judgmental
