BACKGROUND

Karuna Charitable Society is an independent; student run UCMS based charitable organization established in 2002 A.D. to help the poor, needy and deserving patients coming to UCMS Teaching Hospital for medical treatment from different parts of the country. It helps the poor patients admitted to this hospital by providing them financial assistance in purchasing drugs and also by offering them free medical facilities at the hospital, based on individual medical and economic condition.

RATIONALE BEHIND ORGANIZING SPORTS AND CULTURAL EVENT

Out of over 1000 patients visiting UCMS-TH daily, around 10% are financially handicapped who can’t afford even basic life saving treatments, and thus are deprived of basic human rights of being alive.

Since, Karuna Charitable Society is not a government or donor funded society, sustainability has been a key challenge since its very inception. In order to keep it up and running, students from MBBS, BDS, Paramedics have been organizing an annual sports and cultural event requesting negligible yet fruitful sponsorships from various medical and non medical companies as well as institutions supporting the underlying cause. Last year it was a 7 day sports and cultural program but with increasing number of poor and marginalized patients as well as exponentially growing popularity of the event among all fellow medical colleges and hospitals, the organizing team has geared up in adding 1 more day to the original event and making it an intra college festival in the name of KARUNA FEST 2017 CUM INTRA-MEDICAL COLLEGE SPORTS AND CULTURAL MEET. This has already received an appreciation from college administration and medical students all around.

GOAL, TRANSPARENCY AND ACTIVITIES

The overall goal of this annual event is not only limited to some days of merry making. The money saved from the event will be looked after by a Steering Committee of the students from UCMS-TH. The Committee will keep taking up the issues of needy patients, prioritize them according to their medical condition as assessed by the consultants and provide immediate assistance as per its evaluation of the patients’ economical condition and the resources available with Karuna Charitable Society(KCS). Besides this, KCS has been approaching college administration for the discounts on bed charges and other lab investigations of poor and needy patients in the hospital itself.

The Steering Committee maintains an absolute transparency of the money coming in and spent for various purposes.

Various programs like “Annual Karuna Charity fair”, movie shows, sports, cultural events including dance parties, gift deliveries on various occasions like New year, Christmas etc., are organized round the year. These events will help us to raise funds for the charity.

OVERALL ACHIEVEMENTS OF KARUNA CHARITABLE SOCIETY TILL DATE

Till now, we have sponsored more than 45 lakhs Nepali rupees in the past 15 years from which more than 3000 patients have been benefited in one or the other ways. It is worth mentioning that we have been organizing Blood Donation Programs in the UCMS premises at regular intervals as per the need in the blood bank. We have also fed poor orphans at various orphanages of this area and distributed study materials and sports stuffs to them. This shows our commitment of jumping in wherever is the need for urgent and immediate attention.

We have spent Rs. 4,30,550/- from the Karuna Charitable Society this  year(2017/18)  on 120 patients who were directly benefited.

In 2012, 2013 and 2016, we successfully organized Intermedical college Sports and Cultural Meet as Fund Raiser For Charity. Those events were well covered in Local as well as National Level Medias.

FUTURE PLANS OF KCS

With increasing support and help from various sectors, we are planning to extend our area of coverage in the following fields:

• Go Clean Go Green in Rupandehi district and further expanding to LUMBINI zone in near future (ongoing).
• Malaria eradication from Siddharthanagar nagarpalika, Bhairahawa and expanding to Rupandehi District in near future
• Reproductive health education program in schools.
• Technical and Financial aid to construct simple latrines in the nearby rural areas where the level of sanitation is sub-standard.
• Providing emergency health services in co-ordination with local authorities in case of epidemics and natural disasters in terms of technical manpower, medications, clothes and financial help.
• To expand our services to national level and establish karuna charitable society to various medical colleges of Nepal.

As we have always been trying to save as much as we can , for our fund, we haven’t been able to launch our own website. But this time, we are planning to launch our own website as well as android app, and It can also be a great platform to raise fund via advertisement. INTRODUCTION

Karuna Fest is an annual sports and cultural event with stage programs organized at UCMS by KCS involving all the doctors, residents, interns, students and staffs of this hospital.  Other social organizations, business personnel, dignitaries, general public of this region and delegates from other medical colleges are also equally involved.

Intra-Medical College Sports and Cultural Event is an additional attraction of Karuna Fest 2017.
