Internets Effect on Business

The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications throughout the world like nothing before. It was not until the 1960's when the concept of the internet was created by Joseph Licklider of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Licklider created several memos on what he envisioned as a way for researchers and educators to share information. Within a few years Licklider and other researchers were hired by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to create what is now known as the internet. In 1991 the world wide web was released to the public and it was not until 1995 that the first web browser was created. The Internet has changed so much in the two decades since it came into existence and has changed the way the world will do business forever. Society has become so dependent on the internet; we can only imagine what it would be like to not have access. There are websites that have been created with the sole purpose of locating and posting resumes for new jobs. Monster and Careerbulider are websites that have outlasted others for employers to search resumes and place job openings. This has given people the chance to not only find the job that best fits them locally, but around the world.

A more important effect on business has been internet sales. Internet sales have almost doubled every year for the last ten years. This has given people the opportunity to start a business from the comfort of their own home with little or no money and increase their income. Several new companies have been created with the only purpose of selling items on the internet. Companies such as eBay and Amazon started as a small internet business to become a billion dollar corporation. Online sales are referred to as electronic commerce, more commonly known as e-commerce. On the other hand, internet sales have given people the chance to purchase items at a lower price and increase competition. Leaving your home is now an option when it is time for Christmas shopping. All your purchases can now be made from your home without having to worry about battling people at stores for last minute deals. Remember rushing to Blockbuster on Friday night to only find the left over movies that have been picked through? We can now turn
