The Tobacco Industry in Bangladesh is now one of the most profitable sectors in the manufacturing industries. Here are 15 local companies in Bangladesh who produce tobacco but the major players are BATB(British American Tobacco Bangladesh) & DTI (Dhaka Tobacco Industries). This report shall analyze the BATB’s market position in Bangladesh and also talk about BATB’s social behavior

BATB mainly targets the .higher and middle income people and clearly is the market leader in both these segments. It’s a highly profitable company and contributes a lot to the economy. But it does face a few problems and as it’s a controversial business, it faces a lot of criticism too.

But as part of its attempt to resist regulation, BAT has promoted itself as a responsible company. It has done this in several ways like taking social welfare projects like forestation and literacy programs. But there are scopes for development in this segment for BATB.

This report has been prepared for Mr. Neaz Ahmed, Instructor of the course �Introduction to Human Resource Management’ to fulfill the partial requirement of the course.

To provide a view of the Employee Rights and Human Resource Communication Process of British American Tobacco Bangladesh(BATB).

To provide an overview of the selection procedure of expatriating employees of BAT.

To make projections on the �training and orientation’ process of the expatriating employees of BATB.

To show the compensation and performance appraisal policy for expatriating employees of BATB.

To show the measures of repatriation that BATB follows.

To show the rights that BATB employees get.

This report covers the basic �Human Resources Management’ strategies for human resources as it is an elementary stage for the writers in this area. This report also covers the practices of British American Tobacco only based on BAT-Bangladesh’s observation.

Both primary and secondary methods of data collection have been used in collecting the necessary information about BATB. The primary source of data was formal and informal meetings with different personals at British American Tobacco Bangladesh Ltd and Bangladesh Cigarette Manufacturers’ Association (BCMA). Relevant information was also acquired from the sellers of cigarettes and

from the opinions of the general public.

The secondary sources of information are financial statements of BATB, different journals and reports published by BATB and BCMA. The official website of BAT was also used as a secondary data collection source.

In preparing this report certain limitations were faced:

• Due to time constraints, extensive research was not possible.

• Furthermore, this report may suffer from statistical error due to the fact that all data used were secondary.

• Lack of sufficient alternative sources prevented verification of information.

• The analysis and the future projection presented here may vary with opinions of experts in this field, owing to limited knowledge on part of the authors of this report.

British American Tobacco Plc is the second largest cigarette company in the world. It is based in London. Established in 1902, when the United Kingdom's Imperial Tobacco Company and the American Tobacco Company of the USA agreed to form a joint venture, the British-American Tobacco Company Ltd. British American Tobacco is the world’s most international tobacco group. Based in London, U.K. it is a market leader in more than 50 countries with the strength of 90,000 employees selling more than 320 brands in more than 180 markets worldwide.

British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company Limited is a subsidiary of British American Tobacco and is one of the 68 countries in which BAT has manufacturing plants. It is one of the oldest and largest multinational companies operating in Bangladesh. Based in Dhaka it has one cigarette factory in Dhaka and one leaf-processing factory in Kushtia. The company currently employs more than 1300 people and provides indirect employment to a further 24,500 farmers, distributors and suppliers

Listed both on the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges, BATB is the leading company in terms of capitalization at 7.93% of total market capitalization.

BATB started its journey as Imperial Tobacco Company limited in the then undivided India in 1910. After the partition of India, PTC (Pakistan Tobacco Company limited) was established in 1949 to meet the demand for cigarettes of whole of Pakistan.

After independence in 1971 Bangladesh Tobacco Company Limited (BTC) was incorporated. On 2.2.1972 as a private limited company with only three shareholders of Tk.1000 each-2 from BAT and 1 from the government.

In our country, The Bangladesh Tobacco Company (BTC) operated essentially as a monopoly for many years. It was originally a subsidiary of BAT, which has been doing business in Bangladesh since 1954. In the late 1990s BAT bought controlling shares in the BTC, which than began operating directly as BAT. In line with the global identity change; BTC was later named as British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company Limited (BATB) in 1998.

HR Communication is an important part of HR study as it facilitates internal communication in the organization and motivates employee to perform maximum. For a company like British American Tobacco Bangladesh, where over one thousand employees work and communication needs are vast and varied, effective communication is indeed a challenge.
