A difficult co-worker

A difficult employee can transform an easygoing workplace into a most complicated and irritable situation. The most recent addition to the staff at Mattssons Auto has at times become very hard to work with. Initially I welcomed the idea of having an extra person in our shop in order to hopefully get more work done and at the same time make my job a little easier. Him being roughly the same age as me, I was expecting the two of us to get along quite well. Although to say the least, a lot of times I find myself wanted to bounce a wrench off his forehead. But luckily for him and for the sake of keeping my job I have refrained from this action.

There are a few distinct reasons why I get to that point while working with this person. For instance, more often than not I get the idea that my co-worker does not take his job very seriously at all. No matter what the severity of a situation is, he finds a way to turn everything into a joke and just shrugs it off. I feel if a person wants to work and obtains a job that they should take it seriously, because in one way or another somebody is depending on you. Now the second reason I have problems working with this person is in my mind a little more serious, which is the fact that he loves to run his mouth until you get to the point where you just want to lay him out. He loves to criticize peoples work and nitpick little details as well as make lame and immature jokes.

Eventually I see this turning into a physical beating which one isn't going to enjoy very much. Although I would like to avoid getting into that type of confrontation with a co-worker, but it seems inevitable at times. Maybe I can try and simply talk to him about these few points I've made and see where it goes from there. Hopefully nobody will get hurt.
