Animal House Case Study

After reading the case study about a specific fraternity chapter, Omega Alpha Sigma, it is safe to say without a shadow of a doubt that their organization is in deep shambles.  According to the case study, their fraternity house on their university is a complete and utter mess.  A floor that has been completely beer soaked and damaged for over a year now on the first floor, then on the second floor there are bedrooms that seem to have never been cleaned before, very dirty bathrooms, and leaking pipes to could be potentially causing more damage to the house my creating mold within the walls.  Not to mention the fraternity is currently housing a non-student with a free room and board that possess some sort of mental disorder since he had never recovered from a terrible acid trip, which the fraternity even has a rule for but never seems to follow.  As of right now the fraternity is somehow financially balanced thanks to the help of several of the fraternity brothers’ girlfriends that help out by contributing funds and with their cooking skills as well.  However, the fraternity could do so much better if they were to actually uphold their no drug rule, which is a $350 fine if broken, or to also obtain more pledges since they have been unsuccessful in obtaining any new pledges.

After gathering all this data and seeing where Omega Alpha Sigma needs to make some changes, it is clear that it’s all an organization and a management issue within the university chapter.  In terms of their organization, many aspects can apply to this such as the organizational behavior, organizational citizenship behavior, organizational commitment, organizational culture as well as many more organizational components.  In terms of their management, many aspects can also apply to this such as the omnipotent view of management, the socioeconomic view as well as the strategic management and countless others.

For Omega Alpha Sigma’s organizational issues, it first starts off with the fraternity’s organizational culture.  As the case study states, Omega Alpha Sigma has a no drug policy that is observed but never followed.  This is the president of the chapter’s responsibility to enforce this since he’s the most respected member of the organization at the university as well as the one with the most power.  The president should perform monthly rituals as well as inform all of his current brothers stories of the fraternity’s past years to help build morale and commitment to the fraternity amongst the brothers.  The current behavior of the brothers is severely poor since they are not performing their duties such as figuring out ways to increase their funds or not selecting a new pledge chairman to help organize recruitment efforts.  Speaking of recruitment, Omega Alpha Sigma has not acquired a single pledge for the past year, and the brothers are neglecting their jobs of spreading the word of their fraternity, especially since Greek life at the university has dropped from 75% to 25% in the past year.  This all falls on the duties of the president to where he should try to improve Omega Alpha Sigma’s relationship not only with their current brothers but also especially with the university since the administration staff of the university has been lukewarm toward them for some time.  Going back to when the president should perform rituals and tell stories of Omega Alpha Sigma’s past, in doing so would boost commitment, morale and behavior within the fraternity and in result the brothers would be putting in more of an effort to try and create events to help gain new potential pledges that could continue the Omega Alpha Sigma name.
