Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

  1. Overview of the Internship:

The four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program of POKHARA UNIVERSITY (PU) consists of total eight semesters which require students to undergo an extensive internship program, in the sixth semester, for minimum six weeks in a business organization. This internship program, which the BBA students undertake, targets to provide the practical exposure, to train and prepare students for managerial function, to develop work culture within them, to uplift their interpersonal and communication skills encouraging them to interact with the people in the organization.

An intern is a student or a recent graduate undergoing supervised practical training. An internship can be defined as a unique aspect of education that integrates study with planned and supervised career-related work experience, which comprises of 3 credits hours for completion of BBA. This approach helps the student to be aware of the working environment before they actually start to work in any organization. This report has been prepared as partial requirement for the fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration under Pokhara University (PU). This report is mainly focused with the internship activities and overall overview of the subject matter that are being carried out by the intern at Agricultural Development Bank Ltd. During the period of 8 weeks from 1st September  to 19th October .The main objective of this study is to understand and analyze the activities of Agricultural Development Bank.

Today, in the global business context, everybody needs to have adequate information and knowledge about the changing business environment. Every business nowadays has to face the cut-throat competition. It is necessary to have the real-time knowledge with theoretical aspects. Getting real-time knowledge with theoretical concept nowadays is about getting practical knowledge entering into the workplace, so that students may not face problems being into the workplace after their university degree. To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical aspects, internship has been taken as a pool and has become supportive to students also. Internship is the concept where one in course of learning, can put one’s theoretical knowledge into practical aspects. The basic purpose of this is to make student practicable and professional. Creating professionalism will enhance the ability to cope with the changing business environment. The internship position allows a student to gain professional experience in an occupational area they are considering. Therefore, internship program is currently considered as essential for each and every student completing their degree.

This study helps the intern to assess themselves in terms of demand of a profession, and to gain work experience and develop relations with potential employers. The internship report allowed the intern to obtain insights into career opportunities through interaction, observation and work experience in the organization. It became a platform to develop basic research and decision-making skills and to undertake independent analysis and appraisal of different situation. It has helped the intern to become competent, confident and skilled professional in the near future such that strengthening their managerial, entrepreneurial and leadership capabilities in today’s organizations and help in broad understanding of professionalism, integrity and business responsiveness. Moreover, it also provided an opportunity to the organization to assess fresh graduates for some time before employing any of them.

1.2 Objective of Internship:

The main objective of the internship program is to make students familiar with the various activities of different department of ADBL. Other objective of internship is to gain practical knowledge by interaction, observation and work experience. Some basic objectives of the internship are:

  1. To get practical insight about the banking activities.
  2. To get the knowledge about Agricultural Development Bank Limited and its daily workings in a practical scenario.
  3. To know the different products and services of Agricultural Development Bank Limited.
  4. To know the problems and opportunities of job
  5. To develop the research skill.
  6. To become familiar with the banking intuition, rules and regulation of banking sector in Nepal.

  1. Methodology:

The methodologies used for preparing this report are: Learning from the staffs of different departments

  • Direct interview and interactions with the manager, head of credit department.
  • Observation and work at the real working environment.
  • Various publications and reports of the ADBL.

  1. Organization selection

As a student of BBA, commercial banks are the most advanced type. So, with much analysis and understanding of opportunities given to interns to learn and grow within internship period, ADBL, Gaushala Branch Office was approached for the internship where internee have submitted cover letter, photocopy of citizenship certificate, curriculum vitae, along with the college recommendation letter which internee dropped in the Human Resource Department (HRD) of Agricultural Development Bank Limited, Gaushala Branch Office. After fulfilling all the formal paper works as per the rule of the organization, and then they approved intern to join from 1st September 2015.

  1. Placement

Placement in the different departments provided the exposure and understanding of the various service and procedures of the bank and its relationship with its customers. During 8 week internship period at Agricultural Development Bank Ltd, Main branch Gausala, I was placed in Customer Service Department,  ECC, Credit Department where I performed lots of activities and faced various problems and opportunities.

  1. Introduction

With the main objective of providing institutional credit for enhancing the production and productivity of the agricultural sector in the country, the Agricultural Development Bank, Nepal was established in 1968 under the ADBN Act 1967, as successor to the cooperative Bank. The Land Reform Savings Corporation was merged with ADBN in 1973. Subsequent amendments to the Act empowered the bank to extend credit to small farmers under group liability and expand the scope of financing to promote cottage industries. The amendments also permitted the bank to engage in commercial banking activities for the mobilization of domestic resources.
