Jerry A. Coyne’s book Why is Evolution True? takes a stab at special creationist who argue that the Earth and its living organisms were all created by God. Coyne gives a substantial amount of evidence in support of evolution which he says since there is so much evidence evolution is indisputable. He says that the only way special creationist dispute evolution is be pretending it does not exist at all and not acknowledging the substantial amount of evidence gathered in support of it. In 9 chapters Coyne explains what evolution is and the mechanism for most of evolution being natural section. Coyne explains that species undergo genetic change through many generations and evolve into something quite different, and the differences are based on changes in DNA, which originate from mutations. Evolution was a gradual process which can be seen as it is “written in the rocks”. The fossil record although it is incomplete is the key to understanding the evolutionary process and for us to unlock knowledge of the past. Coyne notes the important discoveries of fossil that of which have connected the link between fish with amphibians, and birds with reptiles. The connections between these fossils, Coyne points out, is clear evidence that all species derive from a common ancestry. Further evidence of this common ancestry can be seen in vestiges, a feature of a species that was an adaptation in it’s ancestors that has losses or changed its function. Atavism the reappearance of an ancestral trait, and dead genes, genes that were useful but no longer are in tact or expressed, are also evidence of a common ancestor. Coyne continues his book describing the three parts of evolution working together; common ancestry, speciation, and natural selection. His explanation of evolution is consistent with that of Charles Darwin and Coyne use genes, anatomy, biology, geography, and aspects to support his claims.

Why is Evolution True? takes a strong stand in the position against creationism in favor of evolution. The large use of scientific evidence builds a strong case for evolution. Coyne mentioning at the end of the book that people tell him despite his significant amount of evidence for evolution and natural selection they still do not quite believe in it. Many people might accept Coyne and his opinions on evolution for all animals and forms of life except humans.
