Thinking Critically Simulation

The Simulation was an adequate test of decision-making skills which relate to the business world. The differences in thought between the CEO and me as a manager made the assignment interesting. I think in part it can be attributed to the differences in management styles and the industry I am in. This assignment was a good application to the decision-making tools learned in CSS 330. With the decision-making process and the problem solving tools and techniques a well-rounded student can apply them adequately to see the right options to help save the business. The simulation was an important and invaluable piece of the learning environment.

Tools and Techniques

When examining many different issues within a business used a Cause and Effect Diagram is useful in seeing what cause and effects a particular problem can have. Using Cause and Effect allows a person to see what is an actual cause of the problem and can relate effects to it. In the end it allows an employee to narrow down what the main causes or problems are. With that information it is possible to frame the problem and evaluate the effects.

Using the Decision Tree to examine the possible solutions helps to get a clear picture of the pros and cons of each potential solution. With the problem in the simulation you can use many different combinations to solve the problem. Looking for the best solution a person can use the decision tree to branch out each option and look to see if it helps or hurts the overall situation. Working within the decision-making tree works to break down the various issues helping to investigate the problem and make the proper decisions.

Critical Thinking

Using critical-thinking helps to frame the problem and develop options to resolve the problems. Allowing an employee to be aware of any bias or fallacies critical-thinking is a good addition to the decision-making process. Working within a persons perceptions of the issues and potential resolutions as long as that person is aware of any errors in perception a problem can be evaluated effectively. For a manager of a change store such as the one in the simulation managers often take pride in their work and the success of the shop. Emotion can play a role in the critical thinking process, the manager wants to remove the emotion from the equation to make sure he or she is framing the issue correctly.

Key Points

The simulation provided key points in helping to diagnose the problems, identify any fallacies or symptoms which relate to the problem, how to work with multiple solution sets, and the idea of making an informed decision is central to a manager's role in a corporation. The simulation revolved around the decision making guide and the steps involved in that guide. One key point was the use of the guide and how critical a role it plays in identifying a problem, finding a solution, and evaluating that solution. The decision-making guide is crucial to the success of the decision-making process. Identifying symptoms vs. actual problems is another key point made in the simulation. As a decision-maker a person needs to be able to identify the different issues that surround the main problem. This simulation helped to work with that idea and develop skills to use in future similar situations. Identifying multiple solutions is critical in the success of decision-making. When
