In ‘’ Single-Sex Classes Backed’’ Diana Jean Schemo tells about same sex classes that have proliferated across United States. Schemo reports that the number of single-sex schools had increased along San Diego. She interviewed many schools in San Diego which support that change. These educators claim that single-sex classes benefit a lot the students. In addition there are a lot of parents that agree with the single-sex classes. However, Schemo reports that civil rights groups have started to condemn this creation of the schools because they think that is a way to discriminate. Nevertheless, single-sex classes benefit both students and their parents.

First, students focus more on academics. In single-sex classes, students are not going to be distracted by the opposite sex because boys will not try to impress girls and girls will not try to have the best outfit to impress boys. That allows students to focus more on the classes and studying. Moreover, that means less disciplinary problems. Schemo quotes Hector Espinoza, the San Ysidro School principal who says that the learning environment in both girls and boys classes when it is single-gender is enhanced, less disciplinary problems, less trying to show off which each other. Likewise, Bromley Brook School, an all girls school in Vermont, states on their website that ‘’ girls performed between 15 and 22 percentile points higher on standardize tests when they went to separate schools’’. This can show that in same-sex classes students are more concentrated to achieve their goals.

Second, same- sex classes give peace of mind to parents. Parents always want the best for their child. They want to have choices because the schools environment that is good for one student may not be right for another. If a parent thinks that their child is being benefit in a same-sex school, they will feel good with his or her decisions. Parents know that in same-sex classes their children will be in an environment in which, as Schemo reports, teacher can focus more on academics instead of discipline. Consequently, parent will be happy because their child will achieve academics goals. In addition, some parents may choose same-sex classes because it is better fit with their culture or religion. For example, Schemo says in her article that Carver Elementary school in San Diego now has same-sex classes because the Somali Muslim students requested them. That shows how parents will feel with their decisions to send their child to a single-sex school.
