A symbol that has an important meaning in Persepolis is the key. When the key is first mentioned, Marji’s maid is holding it and explaining that the key was given to his son. In panel 99.4, Marji’s maid says,”They gave this to my son at school. They told the boys that if they went to war and were lucky enough to die, this key would get them into heaven.” This symbol represents a kind of last resort for the children. I used the term “last resort” because in panel 102.1, it says, “The key to paradise was for poor people. Thousands of young kids, promised a better life, exploded on the minefields with their keys around their necks.” Since the key was only for poor people, others convinced the children that the key would get them into heaven, a place better than where they are now. In panel 101.7, it says, “They come from the poor areas, you can tell...First they convince them that the afterlife is even better that Disneyland, then they put them in a trance with all their songs.” If dying is being compared to Disneyland, then the key must have some symbolic meaning referring to a better afterlife, or a “last resort”.
