The book ‘Parable of the Sower’ reads like a series of journal entries written from the point of view of the main protagonist Lauren Olamina. The first five chapter, which span about 8 months (July 2024 to March 2025) are an introduction to the characters and daily life inside her neighborhood walls. As Lauren, her father and several other people from the community rode out a church, the book draws a grim picture of what life outside the walled community is like – misery, diseases and homelessness. Throughout these chapters, we are also made aware of the current political climate – a president getting elected, vowing to bring the country back to its former glory. A common occurrence in Lauren’s community is a high turnover of people – whether it via death, suicides or marriages – which are described in some of her anecdotes. In Chapter 5, Lauren discloses her intentions to leave the community to Joanne and advises her to study books on self-sufficiency, plants and wilderness survival like she did, in anticipation of a potential emergency.

The first chapter of the book presents a very interesting contrast between urban and rural experiences. While Lauren enjoys looking at the constellations, which are visible due to the lack of city light pollution, her grandmother wishes there were cities and lights again. Like most people, it is difficult to go back to a simple rural life after having lived in an urban setting, with all the amenities it brings. On the contrary, one could compare Lauren, and the other kids in the book, to a Masaai child in a Kenyan village, for example; they are content with what they have as that is the only thing they know. The book also demonstrates the concept of Precarity very clearly – the people in the walled community don’t have much, and often struggle to subsist – but they are still very generous toward another, even going as far as donating clothes and food to someone they dislike after a robbery.
