1) INTRODUCTION

The lumber and wood industry is engaged in activities such as manufacturing products made out of wood. It comprises of firms which are primarily engaged in undertakings as sawing the logs into lumber and other similar products; manufacturing products, such as veneers, plywood, wooden panel products from raw wood; wooden products which are used to assemble to make a finished product and other types of timber products.

2) RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

• To identify the potential consumer market in Japan and Netherlands for the Lumber Industry.

• To define the market / competitive environment for the Lumber Industry in Japan and Netherlands.

• To establish logistics strategy between Canada, Japan and Netherlands.

3) OVERVIEW

3.1) Canada’s Lumber and Wooden Industry

Canada’s lumber and wood industries transform wooden logs/inventory into variety of goods. There are two main types of wood produced in Canada that is Softwood and Hardwood.

• Softwood: Originating from coniferous trees which are mostly found in British Columbia geographical area.

a) Sanded (high-quality finishing)

b) Un-sanded (construction use)

c) Overlaid (special uses).

• Hardwood: Derived from deciduous trees, such as birch, maple, oaks, etc. are found mainly in geographical areas of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

• Other wood: Aspen and poplar are typically located in areas of Alberta

3.2) Products

The products manufactured using lumber and wooden industries are

• Lumber,

• Veneer,

• Plywood,

• Particleboard,

• Oriented strand board (wooden chips, wafer board or wooden flake),

• Wooden pellets, and

• Wood composites (engineering wood)

To manufacture the lumber products number of stages are followed to processes the wood, such as sawing, peeling. Slicing or chipping, polishing and preserving it. The industry also produces many by-products, such as wood chips, shaving and sawdust which is used for variety of purposes. They also manufactured as by-products, such as wooden chips, shavings and sawdust. When compared to all the above mentioned products, lumber is furthermost substantial in the volume and worth manufactured. (Milton, Kuhlberg, 2015)

3.3) Trade and Export

Canada produces excessive proportion of lumber out of which lesser than 40 percent is used for domestic purpose, residual of it is exported to other countries. About half of the lumber consumed in Canada is for construction of residential houses and for agricultural purpose. Remaining portion is shared amongst industrial use and miscellaneous.

The most significant importer of Canada’s lumber is the United States since the mid 19th century. The American government has imposed number of tariffs and trade restrictions to shield the lumber manufacturers in the United State market against rivalry of the Canadian lumber business. As a consequence, Canadian lumber companies have condensed their dependency on American lumber trade market.

On the other hand, the most significant customers of Canadian lumber subsequently for several periods are the European Union and Japan. The demand for products manufactured in the geographical areas of British Columbia has been exponentially increasing from China, who have been the substantial customers of Canadian lumber since the early 1990s. Korea and India are nowadays playing as vital buyers of Canadian lumber. (Statistics Canada, 2009)

3.4) Lumber General Manufacturing Process:

1. Machine-driven hydraulic debarking is the first step of lumber manufacturing process is to debark the logs. The machine removes the bark of the logs under water.

2. Sawing in the mills is the next process, bulky logs are positioned on a rotating carrier which carries log to pass through a circular saw.

3. The log undergoes through a process of smoothing the edges, trimming and re-sawing.

4. The massive log is cut into pieces or panel.

5. Smoothening the rough surface and externals. Dimensioning the lumber piece portions.

6. Drying and removing the excess moistness that is in the wood and killing pathogens which may be present in wood.
