Bod in Graveyard

Bod, the main character in The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, was the only survivor

from the murder of his family and was raised by ghosts in a graveyard. He was given the

freedom in the graveyard which meant that he can do things living people can not do, that made

him completely different from his peers. Fifteen years of living in the graveyard, Bod learned

and experienced a lot of life lessons which strengthened him and created many extraodinary

characteristics for him in the future.

By facing and solving all those obstacles, Bod showed great courage and bravery in this

book. From his sad yet unique life experience, he was mature beyond his age and was brave

enough to fight with his fate and take revenge for his dead families. One example that explain

the aspect is when Silas and his parents were really worried about his safety and prohibited him

from leaving the graveyard, he simply answered: “'if I go outside into the world, the question

isn't who will keep me safe from him. [...] It's who will keep him safe from me.'” (Gaiman

181) Instead of going back down, and living under the great shelter of the graveyard with

protection provided by his guardians, Bod chose to stand out and deal with everything by

himself. This shows that when he grows up, he has the courage to go on advantures and will

overcome all the difficulties.

“'He's a smart lad.'” (Gaiman 182) Just like his teacher said, Bod was very intelligentShen 2

and knowledgable in history, perhaps he can become a great historian in the future who would

reveal all those unknown secrets. He was thisty and eager to learn. “He spent much of his spare

time...in the school library...where he read stories as enthusiastically as some children ate.”

(Gaiman 182) In order to gain knowledge, reading is the best way for Bod to know more about

the world. Besides, living in the graveyard with those ancient ghosts provided
