                     Step inside an amazing submarine and explore the underwater world in 20,00 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. While men have traveled and explored the oceans for centuries, no one can imagine a world in the nineteenth century such as the one Captain Nemo  creates in his underwater vessel, the Nautilus. Professor Aronnax, a guest on the Nautilus for ten months, recounts the magnificent beauty of the oceans and the comforts of daily life on the submarine as he tries to understands the complex character of Captain Nemo. The professor’s observations that, although Captain Nemo shows respect for God as the Creator, he does not have faith in God, he seeks revenge against humanity.

   It is evident that Captain Nemo shows respect for God as the Creator when he cries out to him the chapter “Captain Nemo’s last words” and yells out “God Almighty! Enough is Enough!” showing that he recognizes God’s existence. He was also shown to show respect to some human life, such as when one of his crew would die and he would often cry, this also applies to when he saved the pearl diver.  It is quite evident that Nemo has respect for God as the creator.

     Nemo does not have faith in God.  Though Nemo shows respect for God as the creator he has blocked himself off from the rest of the world after the death of his family. The Captain didn’t think that God would not punish the evil that killed his family and chose to take the matter into his own hands by making the Nautilus. Nemo thought that God was punishing him by not stopping the evil that killed his family and didn’t accept this and went on his way disappointed with God.  For these reasons Captain Nemo did not have faith in God.

      Nemo seeks revenge against humanity. The captain seems to have no problem killing people and sinking ships, but yet he cries when one of his crewmen dies. He says that everyone on the surface is a savage and seems to have some emotional baggage when it comes to being oppressed. The Captain didn’t want other people to be attacked by the evil that claimed his family as well.

       Even though Captain Nemo shows respect for God as the Creator, his lack of trust in God causes him to seek revenge against humanity. Nemo by the end of the novel slowly realises that what he is doing is wrong and only makes things worse. His quest to seek revenge for his family’s death has blinded his judgment and made him lose faith in God.  Even though Nemo does show respect for God as the creator he feels God has wronged him so he believes it falls upon himself to get revenge against the evil that killed his family.
