Clara Barton

Clara Barton was a very successful caring woman. She is the woman who founded the Red Cross organization. She is considered to be one of the most honored women in history.

Clara Barton was a very determined hard working woman. She first started to teach when most teachers were men and she was the first woman to be employed by the federal government. When the civil war started she was working as a recording clerk in the U.S Patient Office. When the troops came flooding in she realized some were very hungry, had no clothes but the ones on their backs, and some were already wounded. She started by taking supplies to the soldiers of the Sixth Massachusetts Infantry who had been attacked in Baltimore, Maryland, by southern sympathizers and were temporarily housed in the Capitol building that was still not finished. During the civil war she heroically risked her life to bring supplies and support to the soldiers in need during the civil war. Not only did she bring the men supplies, but she also provided personal help by talking to them and trying to keep their spirits up.

She founded the Red Cross organization in 1881 at the age of 60. She then lead the Red cross for 23 years. She was inspired to create a Red Cross in America because of the Red Cross in Switzerland, and a book called A Memory of Solferino written by Henry Dunant. He was the founder of the global Red Cross network. He called for international agreements to protect the sick and wounded during wartime despite nationality. This inspired Clara Barton to fight for The Red Cross Treaty to be ratified by the United States.

Clara Barton was a very caring, sympathetic, hard working woman. This helped her achieve her goals and then some. Her sympathy has helped millions across the world and provided shelters and supplies to those involved it natural disasters, wars, etc.
