The Declaration of Independence is a document written by the continental congress, which was later completed by Thomas Jefferson in 1777. This document basically states that America is an independent country and no longer tied to Great Britain, as well as explaining why the colonists wanted freedom from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence helped colonists break free from the reigns of Great Britain as they were having a hard time living under the British control. After the Declaration of Independence was declared, the term “American” sparked, which gave America a sense of respect for being an independent nation and not reliant towards a parent country, which in this case was Great Britain. Their unjust treatment is what led to the Declaration of Independence, the taxes, the laws that only benefitted them is among the many things that led America to revolt. The Declaration of Independence marked a turning point for the colonists in America because once they broke away from Britain, Americans had to make significant political, social and economic changes to become unified. Before the Declaration of Independence, the colonists were going through a tough time handling the British laws and tyranny. King George III had done many unjust things to the American colonies when they were under his control. Some of the many things were when he refused to pass the laws that were in need, sign laws into effect, allow more settlers immigrate to the colonies, placed a ridiculous amount of taxes on things that were a daily need, and the list goes on. For example, when Great Britain had passed a number of Acts, one of the known ones was the Intolerable Act. These acts have played a major role in the cause of the American Revolution and the starting of the Declaration of Independence because their purpose was for the British to have complete control over the thirteen colonies.
