The society we live in today would not be what it is without these philosophers,they fought for individual freedom, freedom in government, religion, economy, and gender equality. The four people who changed our society for the better where John Locke,Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft, they changed our society and shaped the world we live in today. They lived in the 17th and 18th century also known as the Enlightenment period.

The late 17th and 18th century was period of many changes, people were questioning traditions, religion and ways of living. Thinkers or philosophers such as John Locke,Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft, were hopeful they would find new ways to improve and understand society better. They believed there was natural law. They believed that if people observe their surroundings they could discover patterns in nature that could be applied to human activities.

John Locke lived in absolute monarchy,but sometimes the king and queen asked advice from the parliament. In 1689 John Locke wrote these words, “men are naturally in a state of freedom”. Locke was part of two government branches, the legislative and the executive branch. Locke also states that if the government fails, then the people are the ones who get to create a new government. Voltaire was one of the leading historical supporters of tolerance, he wrote poems, novels,essays,plays and over 20,0000 personal letters. Voltaire’s main idea was freedom in religion. Voltaire said “if there is one religion, then it would be an arbitrary, and if there was two, people would kill one and others, but if there was a multitude of religions, there would be peace and happiness”. Voltaire’s ideas are similar in a sense to John’s because they both believe people should have freedom in what they want. Doc B
