I have chosen to discuss what the science of personality can reveal to us about the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. The entire world was taken by surprise when he was announced as the United States’ president, but the truth is the society voted, in part for the personality traits he expressed during his campaign.  It’s clear there are many factors that influenced his victory, however it’s been intriguing to see the type of emotions this character has woken up in our society. The world is still in a state of shock, and still there are people who don’t understand the results on the election day.

It’s understood, since Donald trump announced he was running for president as well as during his campaign, people focused more on how Trump carried himself and conveyed his messages in rallies about his intentions rather than his stance on issues going on with the country. Every week we see the media focusing on how Trump is extremely unconventional compared to the politicians the country is used to. Seeing the personality of the president of the United States causes such interest for everyone; I will analyze the five factors that contribute to the model of personality which are Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion.

  • Conscientiousness is known as the susceptibility for a person to be organized, considerate to other and dependable which is crucial for a candidate for presidency to possess. Donald J Trump rarely showed any signs on conscientiousness, his speeches were not scripted but the opposite never read any speech, most of times his rallies ended up in conflict due to the media response and at time inconsiderate to certain cultural groups.
  • Agreeableness is known as someone who is accepting of other’s view, social norms and respecting them accordingly even if does not agree. Donald J Trump is not known for accepting other people opinions, thoughts and we have experienced him having the people he does not agree removed and arrested from his rallies, eventually taking legal action towards them.
  • Neuroticism is the habit for a person to show signs of anxiousness, insecurity and hostility with others. Although, in my opinion Trump is not an anxious or insecure person but quite the opposite, he prides himself in being very confident by constantly talking about what he is worth, and he owns. It’s been noticed how hostile Trump can get when he is attacked verbally at his rallies, or when he wishes to make a point to his followers.
  • Openness is the ability for a person to be creative and knowledgeable about other ways of life. Donald J Trump proved his way his presidency would be, his way or no way. Every person who tried standing in his way became expendable and he shows no mercy when dealing with certain groups of people who are different than him of what he believes America should stand for. By the way, very unlike any other former presidents of the United states.
  • Extraversion is the act of being social and bring positive energy to every group meaning for a president he should bring positivity to every cultural group, not only the group he shows he wants to represent. Time after time he has shown a yearning to divide people, instead of unite for a better future in our country.

Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory of personality explains a close look at the unconscious drive that drives people to behave in certain ways throughout their lives. The three component parts of the mind are: The id, ego and superego which according to the theory do not work as a unit but these parts think and behave differently even at times working together. The id is the most primitive of the three structures and it’s what gives Trump his basic personality, authenticity and impulses. Not knowing what Trump would do next and the lack of common sense at time is a perfect example of id. The superego is seen as the thoughts concerned with morals, and “conscience”. It develops as a child and in this case, we can see how coming from such as rich family might have affected Trump. He never takes ownership of the wrong action he has taken or things he has said. Rarely he gets reprimanded for his behavior which only caused him to continue to behave this way. Finally, the Ego is according to Freud considered to be one’s true self, party conscious and partly unconscious. Trump has been seen lately to compromise in order to make America Successful. He understands in order to accomplish, his goals for this country he needs to compromise and work together with others. The ego is his understanding of this, we can only hope he continues to get better as a leader!
