On August 6, 1945, the U.S did the most horrible act of ignorance and terror: they dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb killed thousands by the explosion and even more by the radioactive fallout. This was foul play and should be recorded in all of history so that it may never again be repeated.

As an American, I am ashamed to say that my country could commit such a cowardly act. The U.S. was afraid of Japan's never surrender attitude so they decided this was their only chance. An atomic bomb was not the only chance and it was not even one of two; it was one of about a hundred. President Truman says that he tried to negotiate, but if he only gave Japan an ultimatum, is it really negotiating? World War II is said to be a war of bravery, but at this point I think it was an army of men afraid to be courageous, so they ended it the quickest way they knew.

Also, it must be noted that no one knew the full effects of the atomic bomb, so Hiroshima was a sort of experiment. I do not know what kind of scientist would do an experiment risking hundreds of thousands of lives, but I sure would hate to meet him. This was wrong and I feel that the U.S. should do something to compensate for such a horrible catastrophe. For example, the U.S. has doctors and scientists that could team up with the Japanese to help them find better treatment for radiation sickness. The least that could be done is to give a formal apology to the Japanese.

There are many that would recite the old saying, "All is fair in love and war," but is that the message that children should be receiving? I think they already are, since children are now shooting up schools and then shooting themselves. These children are growing up in a world where the guy with the gun wins. The "good guys" of today still end up killing people, stealing, and cheating to win. This is quite different from decades ago when the hero represented peace
