On October 14, 1890 one of the best presidents in the history of the United States was born, Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was the first president to be born in Texas, and was the third of seven brothers in his family. His birth name was David, but it was changed at his matriculation at West Point to Dwight. He graduated from Abilene High School in Kansas in 1909. A friend talked him into applying for the Naval Academy, he passed the exam, but he could not be admitted because he was past the age of admission. Kansas Senator Bristow recommended his admission into the military academy which he made in 1911. He graduated in the upper half of his class in 1915. He married Mamie Geneva Doud on July 1, 1916, and they had two sons. Their first son Icky died of scarlet fever.

Eisenhower worked with the infantry until 1918. During World War I he became the #3 leader of the new tank corps, and spent his time training in Pennsylvania, but never saw combat. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor to start World War II, Eisenhower was appointed to General Staff in Washington D.C. Here he was responsible for creating major plans to defeat Japan and Germany. Later he was appointed to Deputy Chief in charge of Pacific Defenses.

In December 1943 it was announced that Eisenhower would be appointed to Supreme Allied Commander. While he was in this position he was put in charge of carrying out the allies assault on the coast of Normandy in 1944.
